Successful Low Vision Conference in Cairo

01-01-0001

On February 12 and 13 2025 Cairo hosted the second regional low vision conference, experts from around the world shared knowledge on rehabilitation, low vision, genetics, medical advancements, AI and technology.

Reflecting on a successful low vision conference, it is impossible not to acknowledge the remarkable journey of the organization behind it: Baseera an organization that has grown from a small family initiative into a vital source of support and empowerment for people with a visual impairment across Egypt.

With three locations and strong partnerships with leading hospitals, Baseera is transforming lives. From early detection and medical intervention in rural communities preventing visual impairment where possible, to tailored assessments and training for those with low vision or blindness.

Baseera isn’t just supporting individuals—it’s shaping the future of visual impairment services in Egypt. As an accredited training institute, it offers a diploma course in collaboration with Helwan University, equipping professionals with the skills to provide quality care. Baseera also advises the Egyptian government, helping to create policies that foster a more inclusive society.

The conference showcased the incredible potential of visually impaired youth. Three visually impaired artists exhibited their work, while 18-year-old Mohamed Emad shared his journey of self-advocacy, emphasizing the importance of rehabilitation, peer support, and summer camps. His story underscored a crucial message: educating others about visual impairment is just as important as personal growth.

Despite progress, stigma and misconceptions remain. As Baseera’s founder, Doaa Mabrouk, powerfully stated, “VI children are not impaired; they grow up in an impaired society.” Events like this conference are crucial for challenging stereotypes, fostering dialogue, and inspiring collaboration among governments, schools, and businesses to build a more inclusive world.

Egypt’s strong social infrastructure provides a foundation for change. With advancements in technology, AI, and medical research the future is bright.
Baseera’s dedication, expertise, and passion are not only changing lives in Egypt but also serving as a model for professionals worldwide. Together, we can create a future where ability is recognized over limitation, inclusion is the norm, and every individual has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
